SUMMARY:30. International karstological school "Classical karst" - "Karst - approaches and conceptual models"
DESCRIPTION:In June 2023\, the Karst Research Institute will host the 30th International Karstological School\, which will be dedicated to various approaches to karst research and the development of conceptual models. Early studies of karst in Europe date back to the 16th century\, where researchers focused mainly on the movement of groundwater\, large springs\, ponors and sinking rivers\, and some caves. In the 19th century\, modern scientific methods began to be applied\, focusing mainly on geomorphology\, but soon expanding to other areas of research. Karst research is highly interdisciplinary and has made great progress in recent years. Modelling studies and conceptual models have given us a rich new understanding of karst\, speleogenesis\, karst aquifers\, and ecosystems. As research methodology and technology have greatly improved over the past decade\, the theme of the 30th anniversary of IKS is a more than justifiable choice.

SUMMARY:BRCA: Bones in Caves: Awkward Inconvenience or Hidden Opportunity?
DESCRIPTION:Recreational cavers are often the first people to discover and report new discoveries of archaeological importance in caves. There is\, however\, uncertainty about procedures for ensuring that new finds are investigated\, and how appropriate conservation measures should be implemented. This seminar will outline the problems and opportunities that may arise when cavers encounter bones in caves\, and will be illustrated by case studies that provide some examples of best (and not-so-best) practice.

SUMMARY:New Mexico Geological Society Fall Field Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 73rd annual Fall Field Conference of the New Mexico Geological Society will be held in the Carlsbad area of southeastern New Mexico\, a region last visited by the Society in 2006. The 2023 conference will focus specifically on evaporite karst of the lower Pecos region\, and more broadly on the geology and stratigraphy of the Delaware Basin in west Texas and southeastern New Mexico. This region is of immense economic and scientific importance due to its prolific oil and gas production and its designation by the International Union of Geological Sciences as a Global Stratotype Section for rocks of middle Permian age. Evaporite karst phenomena formed in middle and upper Permian strata occur on a variety of scales and are broadly distributed throughout the region.

SUMMARY:15th EuroSpeleo Forum
DESCRIPTION:The organizers of the 2023 meeting of the German cavers\, the German Speleological Federation as well as the FSE Bureau cordially invites you to join the 15th EuroSpeleoForum (ESF) in Breitscheid/Hessen\, which will take place between 17th and 21st of May 2023. The village of Breitscheid is situated 8 km west the city of Herborn\, about 70 km east of Bonn and about 80 km northwest of Frankfurt/Main. \nThe Breitscheid karst only measures 3 square km. However\, it hosts 16 km of currently known cave passages. The largest caves known are the Herbstlabyrinth-Adventhöhle- System (over 13 km long\, currently the 4th longest cave in Germany) and the Erdbachhöhlensystem (over 2 km long). The area belongs to the Geopark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus with a lot of karst features like dolines\, sinkholes\, dry valleys and karst resurgences. Parts of the Herbstlabyrinth- Adventhöhle-System are accessible for tourists.\nThe meeting venue will be the school compound and a nearby multi-purpose communal hall in Breitscheid. There will be a campground as well as places for mobile homes. Dormitories (sleeping bag and mattress necessary) will be provided in classrooms. Hotels and B&Bs are available in the surroundings of Breitscheid. \nThere will be many field-trips to the local caves as well as surface excursions and presentations. Conference language will be German and English.

SUMMARY:United Nations 2023 Water Conference
DESCRIPTION:Water is a fundamental part of all aspects of life. Water is inextricably linked to the three pillars of sustainable development\, and it integrates social\, cultural\, economic and political values. It is crosscutting and supports the achievement of many SDGs through close linkages with climate\, energy\, cities\, the environment\, food security\, poverty\, gender equality and health\, amongst others. With climate change profoundly affecting our economies\, societies and environment\, water is indeed the biggest deal breaker to achieve the internationally agreed water-related goals and targets\, including those contained in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

SUMMARY:20th International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology
DESCRIPTION:The 20th international event on the similar theme under the patronage of the UIS Commission on Volcanic Caves (CVC). But this time the event is also under the auspices of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network (GGN) and the Asia-Pacific Geoparks Network (APGN). The event consists of two-days presentations and two-days field excursions to several volcanic caves within the Daknong Unesco Global Geopark\, where more than 50 volcanic caves have been identified and explored\, totalling more than 10\,000m in length i.e. the largest and most rigorous volcanic cave system in Southeast Asia. More interestingly there is plenty of evidence of prehistoric human settlement inside several caves – a globally exceptionally rare phenomenon.

SUMMARY:Man and Karst Conference
DESCRIPTION:As part of the International Year of the Caves and Karst\, organized by the International Union of Speleology (UIS) to celebrate caves and karst internationally and teach the world about their importance\, the International Scientific Conference “Man and Karst” is organized in Sicily from 12th to 17th September 2022. The extreme north-western sector of Sicily\, where this event will be held\, which geographically belongs to the Monti di Capo San Vito in the Province of Trapani\, represents an outstanding example for the comprehensive understanding of karst. Here we will explore pure karst landscapes\, caves and spectacular and evocative Mountains and their profound relationship with Man. \nIn this context\, the common relationship of Mediterranean Elimi peoples with its own peculiar karst environment has been represented for centuries\, in the past with a wisely and naturally sustainable use of its resources\, nowadays in an increasingly conflictual way\, as dramatically devastating of its precious resources\, first of all the karst waters and caves threatened by heavy degradation and contamination inclusive from waste waters or microplastic\, for a senseless and inconsiderate use of the territory.

SUMMARY:25th International Conference on Subterranean Biology
DESCRIPTION:100 years of Biospeology at the 1st Institute of Speleology in the world \nIn 1920\, Emil Racovitza was invited by the Transylvanian authorities to be a professor at the newly reorganized University in Cluj. He accepted with several conditions\, one of which was the founding of an Institute of Speleology under his supervision in Cluj and with its own budget. The speleological enterprise started in 1920. After 100 years we are happy to invite you to Romania to show where we are\, as an Institute\, in 2020\, although during the communist period the Institute changed its headquarter in București. \nThe conference has many facets\, one encompasses the scientific and the historical dimensions and others are about the beauties of karst and caves in Transylvania\, our traditions\, food\, and wines.
