SUMMARY:New Mexico Geological Society Fall Field Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 73rd annual Fall Field Conference of the New Mexico Geological Society will be held in the Carlsbad area of southeastern New Mexico. The 2023 conference will focus specifically on evaporite karst of the lower Pecos region\, and more broadly on the geology and stratigraphy of the Delaware Basin in west Texas and southeastern New Mexico. This region is of immense economic and scientific importance due to its prolific oil and gas production and its designation by the International Union of Geological Sciences as a Global Stratotype Section for rocks of middle Permian age. Evaporite karst phenomena formed in middle and upper Permian strata occur on a variety of scales and are broadly distributed throughout the region.

SUMMARY:30. International karstological school "Classical karst" - "Karst - approaches and conceptual models"
DESCRIPTION:In June 2023\, the Karst Research Institute will host the 30th International Karstological School\, which will be dedicated to various approaches to karst research and the development of conceptual models. Early studies of karst in Europe date back to the 16th century\, where researchers focused mainly on the movement of groundwater\, large springs\, ponors and sinking rivers\, and some caves. In the 19th century\, modern scientific methods began to be applied\, focusing mainly on geomorphology\, but soon expanding to other areas of research. Karst research is highly interdisciplinary and has made great progress in recent years. Modelling studies and conceptual models have given us a rich new understanding of karst\, speleogenesis\, karst aquifers\, and ecosystems. As research methodology and technology have greatly improved over the past decade\, the theme of the 30th anniversary of IKS is a more than justifiable choice.

SUMMARY:BRCA: Bones in Caves: Awkward Inconvenience or Hidden Opportunity?
DESCRIPTION:Recreational cavers are often the first people to discover and report new discoveries of archaeological importance in caves. There is\, however\, uncertainty about procedures for ensuring that new finds are investigated\, and how appropriate conservation measures should be implemented. This seminar will outline the problems and opportunities that may arise when cavers encounter bones in caves\, and will be illustrated by case studies that provide some examples of best (and not-so-best) practice.

SUMMARY:Clay Minerals Society Conference: Karst Trip and Session
DESCRIPTION:The Clay Minerals Society is an international organization devoted to the study of clays and clay minerals. CMS hosts annual meetings bringing clay scientist across a multitude of disciplines together to exchange research findings and build a collaborative atmosphere. \nThe 60th Annual Meeting will take place in Austin\, Texas from May 20-25\, 2023. We will have over 30 sessions with four keynote/award presentations. \nShort course will cover chlorite geology\, geochemistry\, and mineralogy. Researchers at the UT-Austin Jackson School of Geosciences and the Bureau of Economic Geology are organizing and hosting this event. Discussions will be linked to examples from the BEG Austin Core Research Center. \nField trips will focus on the clay mineralogy and geology of cave complexes in the Edwards Limestone near Austin\, TX. Researchers from National Cave & Karst Research Institute and UT-Austin Jackson School of Geosciences are organizing this event.

SUMMARY:New Mexico Geological Society Fall Field Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 73rd annual Fall Field Conference of the New Mexico Geological Society will be held in the Carlsbad area of southeastern New Mexico\, a region last visited by the Society in 2006.

SUMMARY:15th EuroSpeleo Forum
DESCRIPTION:The organizers of the 2023 meeting of the German cavers\, the German Speleological Federation as well as the FSE Bureau cordially invites you to join the 15th EuroSpeleoForum (ESF) in Breitscheid/Hessen\, which will take place between 17th and 21st of May 2023. The village of Breitscheid is situated 8 km west the city of Herborn\, about 70 km east of Bonn and about 80 km northwest of Frankfurt/Main. \nThe Breitscheid karst only measures 3 square km. However\, it hosts 16 km of currently known cave passages. The largest caves known are the Herbstlabyrinth-Adventhöhle- System (over 13 km long\, currently the 4th longest cave in Germany) and the Erdbachhöhlensystem (over 2 km long). The area belongs to the Geopark Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus with a lot of karst features like dolines\, sinkholes\, dry valleys and karst resurgences. Parts of the Herbstlabyrinth- Adventhöhle-System are accessible for tourists.\nThe meeting venue will be the school compound and a nearby multi-purpose communal hall in Breitscheid. There will be a campground as well as places for mobile homes. Dormitories (sleeping bag and mattress necessary) will be provided in classrooms. Hotels and B&Bs are available in the surroundings of Breitscheid. \nThere will be many field-trips to the local caves as well as surface excursions and presentations. Conference language will be German and English.

SUMMARY:4th International Planetary Caves Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 4th International Planetary Caves Conference plans to continue capitalizing on advances in the current state-of-the-art cave exploration and exchanging knowledge and ideas between scientists and engineers for future cave missions. Topics include: \n\nGenesis and significance of cave-like features across the solar system planetary bodies\nMars subsurface exploration and science potential through cave entrances\nLunar subsurface exploration and science potential through cave entrances\nThe possibility to search for subterranean volatiles and determine subsurface habitability\nSpace mission concepts\, remote sensing\, robotic access\, and exploration\nThe astrobiology potential of planetary subsurface environments\nTechnologies and architectures required for human exploration and habitation\n\nAdditionally\, the conference will provide a forum to discuss ongoing mission proposals to space agencies and the longer-term objective of developing a strategy for research and robotic exploration of caves across the solar system.
